STARRED PLAYERS 2023

EACH CLUB WITH MORE THAN ONE TEAM IS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE A FORM FOR THEIR PLAYERS EACH SEASON.

The full rules are shown in "Players" under the GMCL Rules menu at Rule 10.3.1. the rules should always be referred to in any claim or challenge.

STARRED PLAYERS IN GMCL

There are rules in place in GMCL to stop a club's best players playing in the club's lower standard teams and the starred player regulations are part of those rules, designed to help make our competition fairer for the players in the lower Saturday Divisions and all Sunday Divisions.

Rules and Regs can never cover every scenario so we always welcome suggestions for changes that can be applied across all our clubs and divisions and ideas can be put forward on our feedback form HERE. Requests for exemptions for individuals should be dealt with using the separate instructions below.

Clubs must supply a new list for each season, update the list whenever needed and the league will also monitor the list and fully review the list mid-season.

In summary (but not to replace the more detailed rules)

Each team with two teams must name a minimum of their best 5 players to include all paid players whether named as professional or not and these players cannot play in the clubs second grade team (List A).
In addition, any clubs with three or more teams must name their next best players to make the list up to a total of 16 (List B) and all 16 are excluded from playing in their third grade or lower teams.
This is reduced to 8 where your 1st team is in Div3 or below

EXEMPTIONS TO THE STARRED PLAYER LIST

The list of the best 5 or best 8/16 players at a club should include your best players whatever their age.

The very best players at the club must be on List A - There are no exemptions to this
If a player at the club could be considered a List B player but does not play a leading role in the 1st XI or 2nd XI then the season exemption can be claimed on the starred player submission form if that player is taking on a captain, coaching or guidance role in a Sunday team. This should be detailed on the form.

OTHER EXEMPTIONS

Under 17 (as at 1st September before the season) players can play in a 3rd XI or lower league and cup games, even if starred, under our Junior Exemption Rules, provided they are Cat1 and have not played U16 or above county or county development level in the current or previous season
Clubs can make requests in exceptional circumstances on up to two occasions per season for a List B starred player to be allowed to play in a lower grade team where there are specific circumstances where all other non-starred club players are unavailable. Clubs should follow full details of the exemption rules.

FORM TO REGISTER YOUR STARRED PLAYERS

This should be a statement of fact.

Only players eligible to play for a club and available for selection play should be listed, (e.g. a player who cannot play until after June cannot be listed until June)

Attempts to get around the system or mislead the Board or opponents will be frowned upon and may incur penalties.

The Board will monitor the list and will challenge entries where applicable.
Changes to the list can be made by the club with good reasoning at any time and should be made if starred players leave or new players arrive but the list must be updated for the final time by 31st July (final date for transfer or registration of new players).
