Premier Sunday Cup Final sponsored by Tetleys

Chris Potts of Bury lifts the Premier Sunday Cup

Bury v Roe Green

Bury 141-8 Roe Green 71 all out

Bury batted first and started reaching 61-2 off 18 with Nathan Ramsay being the main stay of the batting, eventually being out on 37 before a collapse saw Roe Green fight back and Bury were 65-6 two overs later. Lee Halliwell brought stability to the lower order finishing on 36 and with help from Lleyton Belston and Harry Barnett Bury reached 141-8, Steve Errington from Roe Green finished with an excellent 4 for 15.

The match was evenly poised going into the 2nd Innings in the sweltering heat and the Roe Green openers Colin Dermody and Liam Needham quickly reached 50 without loss before Burys young spin duo of Harry Barnett and Lleyton Belston  completely changed the match with an excellent display of slow bowling, both taking 5 wickets and 21 runs later Roe Green were all out and Bury were 70 run winners.

The joint Men of the Match winners were Harry Barnett and Lleyton Belston who both took 5 wickets

1st XI Championship Cup Final sponsored by Tetleys

2019 GMCL 1stXI Championship Final Match Report sponsored by Tetley's

Result :           United Stars  CC 1stXI  – 192/10 in  36.0 Overs

                        Oldham West CC 1stXI  - 114/10 in 31 Overs

United Stars  win by 78 runs

On a beautiful sunny day perfect for a cricket final, United Stars Captain Yasir won the toss and elected to bat first on what looked like a good batting wicket. However, some accurate and steady bowling from Oldham West opening bowlers soon found United Stars struggling at 43/3 but with a few useful partnerships later, one of which was 52 runs, brought them back in control and at 181/6 in the 32ndover look set for a 200 plus score which would have been a very challenging score to set. Unfortunately, it was not to be, as Oldham West grabbed the last four wickets cheaply reducing United to 192/10 in 36 overs and thus managing to keep themselves in the hunt.

The target was 193 and Oldham started promisingly stitching a well compiled 35 runs opening partnership in 7 overs. It was then the opening bowlers of United Stars, Vijay and Ismail, started to find their rhythm and making inroads. After their opening combined spell of 17 overs United Stars had swung the match towards them with Oldham tottering at 56/6 in the 16thover. It was now just a matter of how long Oldham lower order would prolong the inevitable. Sure enough their batsmen did go for their shots and managed to take the game to the 31stover when they finally folded up for a disappointing 114 runs which was far below their best showing, in their run to the final. United Stars thus were crowned deserving Winners of the 1stXI Championship by 78 runs.

There were a few individual performances from both teams which included a well compiled 43 runs from Praduman Mehta – United Stars and Mohd. Arif with 4/36 in 6 overs for Oldham. However, the two wise men in whites for the day, Paul Naden and Philip Holliday, decided it was difficult to separate the two opening bowlers of United Stars, Vijay M and Ismail Iqbal for their fiery opening spell with returns of 3/33 and 3/27 respectively. Both Vijay and Ismail were thus declared joint winners for the MVP award.

It was fitting finale to the 1stXI Championship Cup played in true spirit of the game, hard and fair, with great bonhomie  between the two teams. There was also a couple of difficult decisions made.
