GMCL2021 1st XI Cup Finals

17 Aug 2021

1st XI Championship Cup Final sponsored by Tetley's

Shaw were winners of this year's Championship Cup in a last over victory at Mottram CC.

On another wet and windy day Dukinfield had 35 overs and posted a healthy 185 for 8 despite losing their first 3 wickets in the 9th over with the score on 35. It soon became 63 for 5 with Ben Pilling (2 for 22) and Dilanka Sandakan (2 for 17) bowling well for Shaw. The Duki lower middle order came back fighting though and Qasim Ghafoor, Neil Mistry and Jonathan Gascoigne scored 100 between them with Neil Mistry's 51 not out being key. Zawandi White finished with 3 for 35 for Shaw.

Shaw's response, requiring 180 after a DLS adjustment was steady and slow and Dukinfield were picking up wickets regularly but from 15 overs in to the innings, Shaw were up with the run rate and began pushing ahead and it was Dilanka Sandakan's 66 off 53 balls that made the difference and despite being 8 wickets down this allowed Ben Pilling and Callum Jones a few overs to score the final few runs and they did so with 4 balls to spare. Denuwan Dadallage finished with the best bowling for Dukinfield, taking 3 for 23 off his 7 overs.

Congratulations to Shaw CC, commiserations to Dukinfield CC and thanks to Mottram CC for hosting the day.

1st XI Championship Cup Final Dilanka Sandakan (Shaw CC) 66 off 53

1st XI John Barrow Cup Final sponsored by Tetley's

Congratulations to Daisy Hill CC who were the first winners of the inaugural John Barrow trophy in memory of one of our umpires and workers who supported clubs at this level for many years.

The game was held at Milnrow CC and a full 45 overs per side were available.

Saddleworth are having a great season in Division 2B and are league leaders so were looking to make this the chance for a double but Daisy Hill were strong opponents and made it home by 6 wickets with two overs to spare.

Daisy Hill started well with Neil Tong (9 overs 3 for 23) taking the first three Saddleworth wickets.to leave them at 44-3 after 15 overs. Ben Corbett and Mohammed Shakir put on 80 for the 4th wicket and Shakir's 51 was the highest of the innings and his was the last wicket to fall at 135 for 6. Steven Howard 24* and Haroon Cheema 27* added 62 in the last 10 overs to post 197 for 6.

Daisy Hill's response began well with 39 off the first ten when the first wicket fell but this was quickly followed by two more wickets in the next 5 overs to leave them at a nervy 56 for 3 but they needent have worried because Asif and Hasan Fazal put on a splendid 121 off 26 overs to steady the ship and put the team on the road to a great win. Hassan was out on 177 scoring 52 before Asif (67*) and John Sampson (16*) saw the team home with more than an over to spare.

Commiserations to Saddleworth and thanks to Milnrow CC for hosting.
